Arlene L. Wood

Arlene Loretta Wood, 93, passed away Saturday, November 17, 2012 in Haslett, MI. She was born May 11, 1919 in Hersey Township, Osceola County to Samuel and Florence (Gould) Kraft. She lived the first 88 years of her life in the Hersey – Reed City area. Arlene was a school teacher for 30 ½ years. She taught in rural one-room schools, at Hersey Agricultural School, and retired from Reed City Public Schools. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Central Michigan College. She also lived and worked on a farm with her husband. She was a member of the Hersey Congregational Church and later the Reed City United Methodist Church. Arlene married Verger Ray Wood on January 13, 1939. Verger preceded her in death on March 9, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Florence Kraft and three sisters, Opal Kraft, Helen Keller, and Audrie Thompson. She is survived by her two daughters, Darlene (John) Sutherlund of Williamston and Rita (Joe) Comer of Dansville; four grandchildren, Jalayne Sutherlund (Keith Beaudrie) of Warren, Rod (Julie) Sutherlund of Saranac, Craig Comer of Milford, Mark (Jessica) Comer of Mason; and nine great-grandchildren, Jacob and Tyler Sutherlund, Travis, Ryan, and Carlene Sutherlund, Drew and Brandon Comer, Nathan Palomo, and Elise Comer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 24 at the Reed City United Methodist Church with Rev. Kathryn Cadarette officiating. Burial will be in Hersey Village Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, November 23 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at McDowell Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Anyone wishing to make a contribution in Arlene’s name may consider giving to the United Methodist Church of Reed City, 503 S. Chestnut St., Reed City, MI. 49677.
